RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR STUDENTS – STUDY IN HUNGARY

In this article, we will mention how to apply for a residence permit for students, detailing the documents and conditions required for the residence permit application for the purpose of the study in Hungary.

The residence permit for the purpose of the study can be issued to a third-country national who has been admitted to or accepted by a public education institution registered in the public education information system for pursuing a full-time course of study in the regular school system or in the daytime courses of study under a student relationship in Hungary. It can be issued for who is pursuing full-time education and training in a State-recognised institution of higher education or a foreign higher education institution authorized to operate in the territory of Hungary in daytime courses of study or who seeking residence in Hungary so as to attend a course in a higher education institution, which may cover a preparatory course prior to such education. The permit can be issued for those who are able to verify the linguistic knowledge required for the pursuit of studies and who are able to evidence that public education fees or the fees charged by the higher education institution have been paid. The applicant has to have valid travel documents and possession of the necessary permits for return or continued travel. The student has to be able to verify the purpose of his/her entry and residence. The applier has to have sufficient means of subsistence and financial resources to cover his/her accommodation costs for the duration of the intended stay and for the return to his/her country of origin or transit to a third country. The student has to have comprehensive healthcare insurance or sufficient financial resources for healthcare services. The applicant has to notify the address of his/her accommodation in Hungary.

According to the law, a student means, third-country national who has been accepted by a Hungarian higher education, institution and is admitted to the territory of Hungary to pursue as the main activity a full-time course of study leading to a higher education qualification recognized by Hungary, including diplomas, certificates or doctoral degrees in a higher education institution, which may cover a preparatory course prior to such education, in accordance with Hungarian law, or compulsory training.

It is at least one year but it can be until the duration of training, if it is less than one year or may be it can be extended by at least one or at most by two additional years at a time.

• Entry without visa and the right of residence in the territory of Schengen Member States (not exceeding ninety days within a one hundred and eighty-day period)
• Pursuit of a gainful activity and to engage in employment
• Working in the term-time for a maximum of twenty-four hours weekly, and outside their term-time for a maximum period of ninety days or sixty-six working days in a year.

The third-country nationals who have finished their studies in Hungary can apply for a special residence permit “Residence Permit for the Purpose of Job-searching or Entrepreneurship”. According to the law, this permit allows you to stay another 9 months in Hungary after graduation. In that period, the newly graduated third-country nationals have a chance to find jobs or start businesses. (after this will be changed for a residence permit which based on gainful activity)
So every foreign student receiving a degree from a Hungarian university (or other higher education institute) is eligible for applying for this permit. (The application has to be finished no later than 15 days before the student residence permit expires).

The student have to prove that, he/she is looking for a job or setting up a company. He/she has to prove that he/she has the funds to stay in Hungary (bank statement).The student has to have valid health insurance and accommodation (for example: 9 months rental contract). The applicant has to have the means to leave the EU in case your permit is denied (It means the cost of the leaving /ticket fee).
